The budget being readied by the Obama administration has one item that might sound outlandish: nabbing an asteroid.
The $105 million proposal would begin planning on a two-stage program in which a robotic spacecraft would grab a small asteroid as early as 2019 and drag it back toward Earth, leaving it in a stable position "just beyond the moon," a NASA official said.
As early as 2021, astronauts in a new NASA spacecraft would visit the space rock and take samples. The plan, announced Friday by Senator Bill Nelson, Democrat of Florida, could help defend the planet from dangerous space rocks.
