The crew of sailing school vessel and Catalina Island Marine Institute instructors held the remains of the oarfish on Santa Catalina Island, Calif.
Staff members at the Catalina Island Marine Institute are calling the carcass of an 18-foot oarfish the discovery of a lifetime.
A marine science instructor snorkeling off Southern California spotted the fish Sunday. More than 15 people dragged it to shore.
Because oarfish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, they are rarely found or studied.
